Modelling is all about confidence and grace, not everyone can do modelling. It requires both mental and physical strength. Many of the girls want to become a model just because they have been hearing since their childhood that they are capable of becoming a model. Well, that is not the only thing that you need to become a super model. There are many other aspects that the modelling agencies consider before they hire you.
Today, thousands of girls and boys across the world want to walk the ramp just like their role models. Let us tell you that walking a runway is not as easy it seems on screen. You need to walk the runway in such a way that you own the runway. There are many things that you need to consider before hitting the runway.
Does anyone of you seriously want to become a famous runway model? Do you want to know what it takes to become a runway model? How your models walk the runway? Little secret moves of your role models? If the answer to all the question above is yes, keep reading as in this article we will reveal the tips on how to walk a runway like a supermodel.
Let us head towards our walking lessons
1. Observe Your Role Model
Before you start practicing the runway walk, it is very much essential that you observe the professional and successful models. You can watch and observe them in person at a fashion week or you can take help from the YouTube videos. Just observe how they walk, what do they do with their face when they walk, how they place their feet when they walk, how they pose, etc. Just observe every possible detail and when you think you have enough knowledge with you, start practicing.
2. Eyes Straight Ahead
After watching your favourite model walking the runway, start practicing your walk with your eyes straight ahead. You have to keep your eyes straight ahead so that you do not get distracted by anyone in the audience. You might have noticed that doing so makes the model look classy. If you are not sure of your walk, just a quick down glance at your runway is enough to see if there any obstacles on your way.
3. Head Up
With your eyes straight ahead, it is also necessary that you keep your head and chin pointed straight forward. The models on the runway move their head only when they have to pose or turn backwards. Walking with your head pointed straight forwards defines you as a strong person and that with head downwards will portray you as a weak and depressed person. This makes your personality stand out, whatever happens hold your head up high.
4. Lose the Mouth Tension
When you keep your eyes, chin, and head straight forward, there occurs a tension on your mouth. To loosen this tension, all you need to do is part your lips or you can keep your lips closed but your jaw relaxed with your teeth not touching your mouth. Losing the mouth tension will loosen your whole body tension and will depict you as a relaxed person. The smiling of a model depends on the instructions given by the fashion designer for whom the models are walking the runway. As you are practicing it for yourself, you decide if you want to smile or not.
5. Straight Posture
When you are walking the runway as a model, your posture plays a very important role. Why only the models, everyone in the world should have a better and straight posture. If you do not have a straight posture, start working on it. Try sitting and standing in a straight posture. You can also work on your posture by sitting on a yoga ball for 15 minutes a day or walking with a book placed on top of your head.
6. Arms Swing Naturally
When you are walking, let your arms swing naturally along your side. Never walk the ramp like a robot, loosen your arms and keep your palms relaxed and natural. Also, do not sway your arms like a windmill, just let them sway in a natural manner. Depending what you are wearing, you can place the palms inside one or both the pockets.
As you may have noticed the professional models on the ramp, their toes always point straight ahead. In the same manner, you should also point your toes straight ahead and not point your toes inwards or outwards. If you have toes pointed inwards or outwards, you need to practice and work hard to make them point straight. You can easily do this if you want to achieve your dream to become a model.
8. Hip Sway
As you are practicing the walk, also keep a check on your hip sway. Your hip sway should be normal and not forceful or over exaggerating. A slight sway is feminine and graceful. For the male models, they do not need any hip sway. For them the normal straight posture walk is enough.
9. Walk the Tightrope
Walking the tightrope simply means bringing your legs together while walking. While practicing just pretend that you are walking on a tightrope placing one foot in front of the other. If you are facing issue with this, you can draw a straight line using a colored tape and practice on it.
10. Strike A Pose with Confidence
When the supper models walk the runway, they strike a pose when they come in front of the runway stage. You also try to practice the walk and end it with a pose by leaning on one hip. Your pose should be classy, confident and should be defining your personality.

Many of us secretly envy about the glamorous world of modelling; few of us even love and want to live the life of a professional model. But, all that glitters is not gold in the modelling industry. Just like the other professions, modelling also requires hard work, dedication and a great amount of strength (mentally as well as physically). Being a professional model is not an easy task, there are many advantages and disadvantages.
A lot of people say a lot of things said about the modelling industry. In this article, we will see about all the myths about being a professional model, whether they are actually true or not. Just like the two sides of the coin, being a professional model also has myths and truths.
Let us have a look at the list of myths of being a model
You have to be tall to be a professional model
Everybody might have heard this while growing up. If you are a tall individual, people would appreciate and say that ‘you would look great as a model’. But, if you are a shorter individual and wish to perceive modelling as a career then, people would ask you to back out because of your height. Well, it is true that to become a model your height should be 5’8 and above but the one with lesser height can also hit the ramp.
One of the biggest examples would be ‘Dia Mirza’, who is only 5’5 and was crowned as ‘Miss Asia Pacific’ in 2000. A runway model has to fit certain specific requirements but modelling is a huge industry. There are other types of modelling where height is not considered such a big factor.
You have to be Skinny
Whenever we think of “Professional models”, the first thing that hits our head is a tall and skinny woman dressed glamorously, walking the ramp. While there are few of us who usually believe that you need to be a bag of bones in order to become a model. This is the myth that should be busted as soon as possible.
If you look back into time, you will notice that none of them actually fit into the ‘requirements’ of being a professional model. Nowadays, the world is speaking of seeing the “real woman” as models. And for a matter of change, they are getting what they want. There are many curvy women who are not size zero and are gaining a lot of popularity and fame.
You have to be young to be a model
At the age of 21, you might have heard that you are now useless for the modelling industry. The fashion industry is always looking for models between the age of 16-20 and once you are 21 it is time for the new models to take your place. These are all false things that people make on their own.
As now, the modelling industry is welcoming women of all sizes, it is also looking for women who will appeal to all demographics. There is enough demand for older models in the fashion industries like such as healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and even high fashion. So, if you are 25 years old and dreaming to become a model, you can give it a shot.
You have to be prepared with a professional portfolio
If you are someone who wants to become a model, the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of registering to a modelling agency is that you would need a professional portfolio of yourself. This is so not true, all you need to have is a portfolio of clear pictures of yourself. The pictures that will help the modelling agencies to determine your features and ratio to find out if you would make a good model or not.
You do not need to worry about spending a lot of money on a portfolio rather you can ask a friend of yours who owns a DSLR camera to click clear and beautiful pictures of yours. The requirement of the pictures varies from agency to agency.
You can barely eat proper food
One of the dark and negative sides of being a professional model is that you do not get to eat things you love. You have to follow strict diets, say no to carbs, bread, potatoes, and soft drinks. And you have to eat time-to-time to maintain that hourglass figure that everyone craves for.
False! False! False! Surprised? Well, yes that is not true. Being a professional model requires long hours of standing, sitting, posing in tiring positions, working under bright spotlights, and staying in the same pose for hours on end. There are no specific working hours and the schedule can turn even the strongest person feel weak and tired.
Professional models have a normal body like us human beings and tend to feel tired, hungry or even passing out at photo shoots sometimes if they don’t maintain a proper nutrition. So, let us inform you that the professional models also eat just like us but they just maintain a more healthy diet due to the requirements of their work.
You must have a “Perfect” face
When few of us see a model on the big screen, we always notice their perfect eyebrows, high cheekbones, full eyes and lips, a perfect nose, etc. Then you turn to look at yourself in the mirror and magnify all your flaws. Almost, everyone is under the impression that you have to be perfect to enter the modelling industry.
In reality, if you see there are many models with flaws who are hitting the top position with their flaws. The fashion industry is famous for its ability to make anything look glamorous and attractive. There exists no such thing as a perfect face in the field of professional modelling. You just need to confidently showcase your natural features and just make things work.
These are few myths of being a professional model which should be debunked as soon as possible. Modelling is not for everyone, but you can definitely make it work for yourself if you can just be yourself. We you wish to know about more such myths, do visit this blog. Submitted your best pictures to the top modeling agency but haven’t heard from them? Well, there might be chances that they did not find you suitable for modeling. Shocked? Shattered? Anyone will be but before you enter the modeling world, there are a lot of things that you need to consider like which modeling agency you are going to choose? What type of images do you share with the agencies? How much do you spend? etc. But the most important of all is what type of pictures you share with the agencies, as your pictures speak for you and your personality.
In this article, we will guide you with some tips to make sure you get it right the first time and improve your chances of getting signed to an agency and get booked for modeling jobs. And by the end of the article, the fear of rejection would completely disappear.
Simple Snapshots Are Fine
If you are a newbie in the field of modeling then simple snapshots are fine. Yes, you read it right. The modeling agencies do not expect your professional photos if you are a fresher. In fact, it would be great if you do not have any professional photo. Wondering why? Well, there are few modeling agents out there who will always look at you as a blank canvas and how they can mold your “look” into something that they and their clients are looking for.
Keep Makeup to a Minimum
It might be shocking for few of you out there but it is true. Because every modeling agent wants to see the real you and not the person who hides behind the makeup. A less makeup or a natural makeup like a little foundation, concealer, blush, mascara and lip gloss is all you need. The male models do not need any kind of makeup but a little bronzer will do as long as it is unnoticeable.
Keep Clothing Simple and In Good Taste
A simple outfit like denim jeans with a white plain t-shirt is just perfect. The modeling agents consider your looks and body proportions. It is like they consider you more than your clothes. The outfits you should definitely avoid are long dresses, prom dresses, bridal gowns or something that overexposes your body.
One Headshot and One Body Shot Minimum
The minimum amount of pictures you should submit are one headshot and one body shot. It is most preferred that you submit one headshot in which you are smiling and one headshot in which you are not smiling, including your left and right face and body profiles.
Keep Hairstyles Simple
Agents would like to see the length and condition of your hair, so it is recommended that you keep your hairstyle as simple and well-groomed as you can. If you have long and thick hair, take photos of your hair down and also pulled back. Also, make sure that your hair is in good condition and if you wish to get a haircut, try to get it done before taking the pictures. And avoid picture of hairs with extensions or weaves, as they won’t reveal your real hair.
Include a Swimsuit Shot
If you are comfortable wearing and sharing your bikini pictures then, it is always a good idea that you include one of those in the portfolio you are forwarding to the modeling agent. While posing for a bikini picture, see to it that you do all the basic poses or no posing at all as the bikini picture can turn from beautiful to tacky with unfortunate poses.
Never Submit Nude Photos
This is an obvious one on the list but there are chances that some fraud agencies or agents would ask for your nudes. A genuine agency would never ask for nudes, so make sure that you never share your nude pictures with anyone.
Only You in the Photos
While taking the pictures, be sure that you are the only one in the frame. Avoid sending pictures in which you are with your friends drinking at the bar, sitting at the dinner table or partying; leave those types of photos for you and your friends. As the modeling agents just want to see you.
Do Not Wear Fur
Try to avoid the use of fur in your pictures as few agents find the use of fur in the fashion industry offensive. Instead, you can wear a fur coat which defines you as “young and fresh”, which is the look that agents want in their new models.
No Fancy Clothing or Makeup on Kids
The agencies dealing with fashion and e-commerce always wish to see real kids as they do not want to see pageant or beauty competition type children. Kids should always look real, which means no makeup, frilly dresses or hairpieces. Also, food covered faces may seem cute to you but not to the agents.
Include Your Contact Information
You might have sent the pictures to the agents without any contact information and you haven’t heard from the agent. The agent might have really liked your pictures but because of no contact information available, it was unable to contact you. And this is how you lose your big modeling assignment. If you are sending pictures through the post, make sure you include your full name, the city you live in, your email address, and day and evening phone numbers on the back of every photo.
Include Your Stats
“Stats” are your measurements that will help the agent imagine how you look. Women should always mention their age and the measurements of height, bust, waist, and hip. Men should mention their age and the measurement of their height, chest size or jacket size (e.g. 40 Regular), and waist.
These are some tips that will help you when sending out pictures to the agencies. Remember, ‘ the first impression is the last impression’, so make sure that your pictures are great. Let us take a step towards becoming a successful freelance model
One can become a successful model with or without any certification, as modeling is all about self-control, confidence and physical appeal; if one possesses them in adequate amounts, he/she is bound to become a successful model. But, if you lack the knowledge about the basics of modeling such as walking styles then your control, confidence, and appeal are of no use. Because of this reason some people prefer a modeling course in order to gather all the knowledge to boost their modeling career.
Let us have a closer look at the job requirements
Employers such as the modeling agencies or the magazines look for a professional model with some experience and preferably, certain academic qualifications in the form of courses. Presently, there are a number of institutes that offer certification courses in modeling in the country itself such as Film and Television Institute of India and Frankfinn Institute of Modeling and Acting. These courses provide you with various requirements of modeling, from basics to highly advanced.
The curriculum of these courses includes studies on choreographies, posture making, camera walk, modeling with accessories, etc. The courses also involve the personality development programs which home attitude, improve body language, conduct transactional analysis, and teach stress management; grooming programs which include model makeup, personal care, skin care, wardrobe styling, etc; health & fitness programs which include Yoga, nutrition tutorials, etc.
The certificate of any course is the authentic proof of the skills and experience required for the modeling job and it is a relatively easy way to attract the attention of employers and clients.
If you do not want to empty your pockets and earn a certificate, you have to do the following: Create a portfolio by taking up small or big modeling gigs, or having a professional photographer shoot pictures of yours. It is recommended that you include well-shot pictures according to their categories in the portfolio.
Being photogenic is not everyone’s cup of tea, only a few people are gifted with this skills. The rest is just filters and customized. A model should know what posture will highlight his/her physical appeal the most and should be able to create a bond with the photographer and coordinate smoothly with the whole team. Having a good bond with the photographer will help you as he is the one who will later command control on your body movements and facial expressions from behind the camera lens.
The ones who want to become a runway model must know how to walk with confidence and grace in front of huge audiences. He/she should be fine with all kind of the designer clothes they are asked to wear. They should be comfortable walking in heels.
Networking is an essential fundamental in modeling, as the modeling jobs last for few days or so. In order to easily find the next job, you should have and maintain contact with modeling agencies. The more connected you are with agencies or other sources, more aware you are about the opportunities around.
Now, there might come a time when your agency asks you shoot at a distant location which could be quiet hectic for you. So, in order to avoid the clashes or to cut down the stress, you should be well-organized beforehand. This would help you manage things well and no conflicts with the agencies.
As a model, you should be ready to fight against any situation. For instance, the photoshoot might be at an ice-cold location, or you have to shoot under a hot sun. You should prepare yourself for such kind of situations beforehand.
In the modeling, the one thing that is of extreme importance is ‘Self-maintenance’. In case if you are not able to maintain yourself, there might be chances that you miss out many modeling opportunities. The body fitness and beauty criteria may vary from agency to agency or from shoot to shoot but what remains constant is its importance. A model needs to be presentable in order to work in the industry.
The pay rate of a model depends on various different factors such as the age of the model, previous work experiences, affiliation with modeling agencies, certifications, and appearance. If you are a well-established model then you might get a handful of pay but if you are a freelance model than you would have to consolidate your agency first and so you are in a position where you cannot demand a lavish pay rate.

Things to keep in mind!
If you are a female or male model you will definitely ask this question!
There are obviously many ways to get casting.
At the same time, there are many clothes that you can wear. So it’s not easy to decide how to dress in the right way.
Sometimes after noticing different trends, it is proved that some trends were much more effective than others.
So what is the right outfit to choose for a model and/or for an actress [also applies to men!]?
Get dressed as easy as possible!
It starts from the principle that people who are “looking at you” are there to advertise a brand, promotes a brand or to present their business better.
They must not sell you but the products and services that you will witness.
Appearing in a flashy way, with high heels, shining and psychedelic clothes and great accessories on top of it, as well as appearing out of place, could also distract attention from what is the main purpose of those who are looking for you.
A medium / low heel, a black/dark outfit, perhaps broken by something white and/or coloured, are the right things to wear.
It’s a good jeans, a T-shirt or a shirt, as long as weather permits.
In winter, for obvious reasons, you will have to cover yourself well with jackets and coats, to get rid of them as soon as you arrive on the spot would be a good idea.
5 tips to present yourself to the best
Here are 5 tips that will help you “find” your ideal casting look, tips that will be very useful especially if you are just starting your model career.
Tip 1: When you receive the call details, note the time of day and the directions provided by the customer, your agent, or even the photographer.
This will help you to interpret a clothing code.
If you are applying for a fashion show or presentation in a showroom, an advertising campaign or another such thing, take a look at the style of the brand/company that is looking for the right model and tries to interpret it best always with simplicity.
Tip 2: Unless you are explicitly told what to wear, go to your wardrobe and choose 2 or 3 black dresses, a pair of adorable jeans, a t-shirt or a shirt.
Tip 3: Pay attention to the jewellery you wear.
Always choose small, almost invisible objects, do not wear long and heavy necklaces that cover your body or large earrings that distract attention from your face.
Tip 4: Choose medium / low heels and not bluff on your height, this could be counterproductive and create distrust on you.
Comfortable shoes that make you move and walk well because you may want to see you walking to see if you are the right person they are looking for.
Tip 5: The biggest recommendation is for makeup and hair.
I recommend, use a very “tricky” trick, almost non-existent, a bit of foundation and mascara will be sufficient.
This will send to you who look at you with a pleasant sense of security, so you will be more persuasive.
The simple hair, clean with no lacquer or hairstyles just made the hairdresser.
Of the look you’ve chosen, you first choose the one that suits the time/season.
Secondly, decide for what exalts your best physical characteristics (legs, shapes, breast, chest, etc.).
Third and last thing, it wears something simple to wear fast.
You will often be asked to try clothing at casting, and if you are ready to change quickly and effectively, you will have a better impression than if you prove to be impatient and slow.
Surely this is the easiest way to avoid mistakes, but surely there may be others.
Presenting yourself always in a simple, elegant and professional manner, dressed in black, always represents an excellent winning formula.
If you think that black is “too much”, maybe add some white, or if you just feel it, play a bit with “powerful” colours like blue, purple and red.
